Ballycotton 10 & Meath 5k & HM
Sportsworld was represented well over the weekend races. Six members made the journey to Cork to compete in the Ballycotton 10. This race started in 1978 and it showed with faultless organisation and unique atmosphere. All members had strong runs in cool crisp conditions, but the stand-out performance came from Paul Duffy. With a goal of running faster than Emily’s legendary Ballycotton 56:00mins, Paul demonstrated his strength on the road by finishing a credible 13th and set new PBs across 5 miles, 10k and of course 10 miles. The Meath Spring 5k and Half Marathon was also run over the weekend and Sportsworld had eight members competing across the two distances. Some club members were using this race to gauge fitness for upcoming marathons whilst others were using them to test speed following the strength building winter. Well done to all runners. Some torrential rain earlier in the afternoon didn’t deter a massive crowd of Sportsworld runners stomping around Raheny for the annual Raheny 5 Mile. Now in it’s 29th year this is one of the most well liked and well oragaised races on the calendar. Both the men’s and women’s races were won convincingly by Joe Sweeney and a returning Mary Cullen. Well done to everyone who took part in a very enjoyable race and a word of thanks to race organisers Raheny Shamrocks and all the Sportsworld supporters. Our own race got a great boost from those who helped promote the Terenure 5 Mile after today’s event. Sportsworld had one representative at this charity race in Limerick on Sunday morning – Packie Enright – who ran 37:02. This was thirty seconds ahead of the winning lady – Clonmel’s Angela McCann. It was enough for eight place overall in a race that was won in 34:45. It was a well organised race that took place in ideal conditions around the scenic UL campus, finishing on the track – Lanzarote style!
