We started off with a beautiful clear but little chilly afternoon in Raheny. All eyes were on Sean Connolly from Tallaght to see if he could retain his title. Sean held his title and managed to hold off the host team Raheny boys by leading home in a time of 24.13, next Mick Clohisey 24.23, third Mark Kirwan 24.27. The ladies race was very competitive with Linda Byrne first home in a time of 26.31, followed by Fionnuala Britton 26.46 and Maria Mccambridge 27.14. As for our own squad we had a good number of ladies running. Senior Women – Sandra Armstrong 19th place, time 31.59, Stephanie Bergin 22nd place, time 32.34, Mairead O’Callaghan 27th, time 33.32, Susan McDonnell 30th place, time 34.42, Orla Jordan 32nd place, time 35.16, Catriona Higgins 55th place, 37.38, Petrina Mulroe 59th place 37.51, Karen O’Connor 60th place, time 37.577 and Natalia Sokolowska 84th place 39.18 Our Senior Womens Team finish 6th place which consisted of Stephane, Susan and Orla well done girls. Also running under their age categories in the Women Section we had Breda Brown 5th in her age catagory time 36.19Anne Sweeney place 10th time 37.36 with Tara Murphy in the same catogory 11th place, time 37.37. Next we had Judith Lloyd 2nd place in a time of 38.42 and Carol Lynch in the same catgory 3rd place time of 40.28. Now onto the men unfortunately we had no Senior Men this year. But our men didnt let us down and placed very well in their age category.Kieran Foley finish in 14th place in his age time of 30.44, Stephen Willoughby 22nd place in his age time of 34.29, Trevor Lloyd 2nd place time 37.35, Ray Carpenter 24th place in 37.16 Well done to all who ran.

Saturday the 18th of July was the Adidas 5miles race in Phoenix Park. For some this is the first step on the long road to the Dublin Marathon in October and for others it’s a chance to put the Thursday Farlek training into action and show some of the 5800 participants the difference between runners and joggers.

There where several warnings at the start of the race that this was not a flat course and that the first 2miles was a misleading easy down hill section followed by a punishing 2 mile section of climbs for those that got carried away with the Rocky theme music in there head at the start. The final mile was a nice flat section to either hold your place or pick some people off. Personally I didn’t like the row of portacabins on the final stretch just as your trying to get your lungs to work their hardest and I can think of half a dozen things I would like in a goodie bag at the end of a hard race, Hollywood tooth paste and a cheese sandwich didn’t make it on my list, thank God for the Swiss Deli.

There was a huge Sportsworld contingent, with Paul O Connell and Lucy Darcy the fastest man and woman home. Most people had their singlets but if anyone wants one who doesn’t have one they can be got at the club, it makes it easier to make your way to the front at the start and it intimidates the joggers not to mess with you.

It’s that “I’ll get you going” spirit that only an ex Olympic Boxer can own so uniquely.
You know? Incites you but disguises it so beautifully.
Even the walk has a certain “I just knocked him out” lethargic relaxed look.
Yes, he is The General but never more so than on Race Day in May.

Us veteran Club Members understand Race Day.
Years of practice allow us all to slip seamlessly into our role.
Myles on the finish, Tony on chaos, Trevor at Terenure and so on.
But it’s the Cock O’ Hoop walk that gets me every time.

You see, I’m the driver of the Clock Car Jeep and it’s surprisingly stressful.
The Olympic European Multi record holder fuels it beautifully.

An hour before the start the clock gets fitted. The techno guys give clear instructions;
“Don’t touch this, hit that, wait, go, pause, prepare”.
Atmosphere rising.

10 minutes to go and I line the Clock car up 30 meters from the start. No sign of Mick.
5 minutes to go “Where is Mick?”.
2 minutes to go, Mick appears, the strut is on.

Like Napoleon, he walks head high, to inspect the start line. Anxious athletes are fuelled to go.
The General utters his few words, the tension builds.
The Techno get strung out and I pray that the Jeep won’t stall.

10 seconds to the start shouts one to the other.
Garda bikes circle and growl.

The walk begins, the tension rises.
The Olympian begins his walk. It’s not a hurried walk, it’s an Olympians walk.
It is his moment to return to ‘his corner’.
The tape is dropped, athletes are marshaled forward, the Olympian continues.

Now he is dueling, fighting, challenging.
The Olympian is an Athlete.

With his back to the Runners he dares them to race.
The Jeep groans, the Gardai growl impatiently.

The gun goes, The Olympian still walks.
“For &*^%s sake Mick, come on”.
It makes no difference.

The athletes are unleashed in a ferocious wave.
The Olympian responds and, with seconds to spare, leaps like a salmon into his seat.

His grin says it all.
Another KO, another victory.
Perfect timing.

When 5 miles of meandering are done we finish for another year.
The Chairman looks calm, his victory sure.

“That’s that, no more, too much, I’m done” he protests.
I pause and say “Until next year”.

The Olympian smiles.
He knows I’m right and he’ll be back!

Conor Kenny
